Where do people spend New Year’s Eve in Istanbul?

Istanbul has no single official countdown spot, but a few places fill up every year: Taksim Square and İstiklal Avenue, Ortaköy on the Bosphorus shore, and the squares around Kadıköy pier on the Asian side. Reports from the night of 31 December 2025, such as CNN Türk’s coverage, also mention crowds at Sarayburnu in the old city, a short walk along the shore from Eminönü.

Street celebrations mean standing in the cold, security checks and a hard trip home. Many people prefer a seated dinner with a view, with music and a countdown but no street crowd.

When should you book a New Year’s Eve dinner in Istanbul?

Earlier than you think. 31 December 2026 falls on a Thursday, and 1 January is a public holiday in Türkiye, so many people will turn it into a long weekend. Sea-view tables are limited by the shape of the building, not by demand.

At Yıldızlar there are two kinds of view seats: window tables inside the hall and open-air tables along the bridge, right above the water. If you care about the view, say so when you book. Places for the gala night are limited, and a booking only counts once the 50% deposit is paid. Booking in October or November gives you the widest choice.

What is New Year’s Eve dinner like at a fish and meze restaurant?

A Turkish fish dinner is slow by design. It starts with meze (small shared plates such as haydari, a thick garlicky yoghurt dip, or acılı ezme, a spicy tomato and pepper relish), moves on to hot starters like fried calamari or butter-fried shrimp, and peaks with the fish. On a normal evening at Yıldızlar, guests choose their fish from the display on ice. On New Year’s Eve the kitchen serves a set gala menu instead, built from the same meze and seafood, with a choice of main course. From the tables you look across to Karaköy and the Galata Tower, with Üsküdar and Çamlıca hill on the far shore. The New Mosque (Yeni Cami), finished in 1663 according to its Wikipedia entry, stands lit up right next door, and ferries keep crossing in front of you late into the night.

The Yıldızlar New Year’s Eve 2027 gala dinner and party takes place on Thursday 31 December 2026: a restaurant and a nightclub in one night, with dinner by the water first, then a DJ, dancing and fireworks at midnight.

The price includes the gala menu, unlimited local alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, the DJ and the fireworks. A 50% deposit confirms the booking, and the balance is paid at the restaurant on 31 December. After you send your request, the restaurant replies with the deposit payment details.

How do you get to Eminönü on New Year’s Eve, and home again?

The restaurant is on the lower level of the Galata Bridge, at the Eminönü end, on the Bosphorus-facing side. Normally the T1 tram stops a few minutes away, but on New Year’s Eve that has not been reliable.

According to Metro İstanbul’s notice for New Year’s Eve 2024, the metro lines M1 to M9 ran until morning, while the T1 tram did not run between Kabataş and Sultanahmet after 22:00 by decision of the Istanbul Governorate. Eminönü is on that stretch. The same restriction applied on 31 December 2025, as Diken reported, and the last Marmaray trains that night left the end stations at around 01:20 to 01:30. İBB also added extra bus and ferry trips on past New Year’s Eves, as listed in İBB’s own announcement.

None of this is a fixed rule. Here is a plan that works whatever the announcements say:

1. Arrive for the 20:00 start, well before the 22:00 tram cut of recent years.
2. Check the official İBB and Metro İstanbul channels in the last week of December for the 2026 plan and any road closures.
3. Know your walking options. From Karaköy you can walk across the bridge in about ten minutes. The M2 metro stops at Haliç station on the Golden Horn bridge, a walk along the water from Eminönü, and it has run all night on recent New Year’s Eves.
4. Consider a ferry for the way in. Ferries from Üsküdar and Kadıköy arrive at Eminönü pier; check the late-night timetable before relying on one to get home.
5. Plan for a 02:00 finish. The last Marmaray trains left before then in recent years, so the all-night metro, a walk or a pre-arranged taxi are the realistic ways home.

What should you wear, and what should you expect?

A gala night is a good excuse to dress up a little, in shoes you can dance in. Late December by the water is cold and windy, so bring a proper coat even for an indoor table; you will probably step outside for the fireworks.

Expect a full room and a long night: dinner first, then louder music once the DJ takes over. If you want a quiet dinner built around conversation, a regular evening on another date suits that better. Families are welcome, but the party runs until 02:00.
