For a romantic dinner in Istanbul with a Bosphorus view, book a table for 30 to 45 minutes before sunset, ask for a window or open-air seat, and share meze and a whole fish. At Yıldızlar Restaurant under the Galata Bridge you watch the light fade over the water, then the bridge lights and the New Mosque come on.
Below is how to plan the evening: when to arrive for the light, which table to ask for, what to order for two, how to set up a birthday, anniversary or proposal surprise, and where to walk afterwards.
When is the best time for a romantic dinner by the Bosphorus?
The best hour is the one just before sunset. You get the water in daylight, the sky changing colour over the Golden Horn and the old city, and then the switch to night: lights on the bridge, the lit dome of the New Mosque (Yeni Cami) next door, and the Galata Tower glowing across the water in Karaköy.
Sunset in Istanbul moves by almost three hours across the year. The table below gives approximate times for the middle of each month, calculated for the city centre in local time (Türkiye uses UTC+3 all year). For an exact date, check timeanddate.com’s Istanbul sun calendar.
| Month | Sunset (approx.) | Book a table for |
|---|---|---|
| January | 18:00 | 17:15 |
| February | 18:35 | 17:50 |
| March | 19:10 | 18:30 |
| April | 19:40 | 19:00 |
| May | 20:15 | 19:30 |
| June | 20:35 | 20:00 |
| July | 20:35 | 20:00 |
| August | 20:05 | 19:30 |
| September | 19:15 | 18:30 |
| October | 18:25 | 17:45 |
| November | 17:45 | 17:00 |
| December | 17:35 | 17:00 |
A later booking has its own appeal: the ferries keep crossing under the lights long after dark, and you can linger over the meal. Yıldızlar is open every day from 10:00 to 02:00, so there is no rush.
Which table should you ask for?
The restaurant has two kinds of view seats. Window tables inside the hall look straight out over the Bosphorus toward Üsküdar and Çamlıca hill, with Karaköy and the Galata Tower to the side. Open-air tables run along the bridge, directly above the water, close enough to hear the ferries.
Choose by season. From May to early October the open-air tables are the obvious choice for a couple. From November to March, wind off the water can be sharp, and a window table gives you the same view in comfort. Whichever you prefer, write it in the reservation note: “window table for two” or “open-air table by the water”. The indoor hall, with its wooden ceiling, chandeliers and old Istanbul murals, also has a quiet charm on a rainy night.

What should two people order?
A Turkish fish dinner is built for sharing, which suits a couple well. A good order for two looks like this:
- Cold meze (small shared plates): four or five is plenty. Try haydari (thick yoghurt with garlic and herbs), acılı ezme (spicy tomato and pepper relish), patlıcan ezme (smoky aubergine), deniz börülcesi (samphire with olive oil) and a little lakerda (cured bonito).
- One hot starter: butter-fried jumbo shrimp (tereyağında jumbo karides) or calamari.
- One whole fish to share: walk to the display on ice and choose together. Ask for the weight and price before it goes to the kitchen; fish prices depend on season and weight. Then decide with the waiter how it should be cooked: grilled, baked on a clay tile (kiremitte) or salt-crusted (tuzda), which arrives at the table sealed in a salt shell.
- Something sweet to finish, and Turkish tea or coffee.
To drink, rakı is the classic partner for fish: an aniseed spirit you mix with cold water until it turns milky white. Our rakı and meze guide explains how to drink it. If rakı is not for you, a bottle of wine works just as well. To see which fish are at their best in the month of your visit, look at our fish season calendar, and browse the full menu before you come.
How do you plan a birthday, anniversary or proposal surprise?
Most surprises go wrong because the restaurant hears about them on the night. A few simple steps avoid that:
- Book ahead and say why. Use the reservation note on the booking form to mention the occasion: anniversary, birthday or proposal.
- Ask for the right table. A window or open-air table with a clear view of the water works best for a proposal.
- Call or message beforehand. On WhatsApp or by phone, explain your plan: when the ring or gift should appear, if you will bring a cake or flowers, and what you need from the staff. Ask what is possible rather than assuming.
- Time it with the light. Aim for the moment the sky turns dark blue and the bridge lights come on, usually 20 to 30 minutes after sunset.
- Keep a backup. If it rains, a window table indoors still has the view.
Where can you walk before or after dinner?
The streets and quays around the restaurant make a good short walk. Climb the steps to the upper deck of the Galata Bridge, where anglers usually line the railings, and walk across to Karaköy. The current bridge, about 490 metres long, opened in December 1994, according to the Galata Bridge entry on Wikipedia; our own history of the Galata Bridge tells the story of the fish restaurants underneath it.
Back on the Eminönü side, the waterfront by the ferry piers is lively until late, and the New Mosque square opens onto the Spice Bazaar. The mosque was started in 1597 and finished in 1663, according to its Wikipedia entry. If you arrive early, see our guide to the area around the Spice Bazaar for a short route through the old streets.
Getting here is easy: the T1 tram stops at Eminönü a few minutes away, ferries from Üsküdar and Kadıköy arrive at Eminönü pier, and from Karaköy you can simply walk across the bridge.
